Labels

"There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." -Shakespeare

Taoism stresses the point that nothing in this world should be labeled good or bad- things are just the way they are. But is it actually possible for us to develop such great equanimity and not judge things or events in our lives? Pain doesn't feel good, so is it not natural for us to label pain as "bad?" Perhaps, but pain also serves a purpose- it helps us out of danger and prevents us from sustaining further injuries. Is that not a "good" thing?

The point is, things are too complicated and dynamic to be judged by a static label of good or bad.

"A beautiful woman is an object of desire for the seductor, a distraction for the monk, and a meal for the wolf."

Don't bother labellings things, just enjoy them now- for tomorrow, it may be gone.
